Park Species Detail: Checklist information (nativity) updated 4/11/03 by professional judgement of Bruce Connery, ACAD wildlife biologist. DATA SOURCE (CONTINUED): Baird (1983); Bond (1969); Tyson and Bond (1941) NOTE: MOST RECENT REPORTS DO NOT REFER TO SUBSPECIES; SOME OLDER REPORTS REFER TO SUBSPECIES ANATUM Sibley (2000) recent reintroductions in many areas of captive bred birds similar to the Pacific form, Peale's form. The tundra breeding population (ssp. tundrius) is widespread in migration in winter. Recent reintroductions in many areas involve captive bred form similar to Peale's, and Peale's-like birds are now found across North America. Woods (1997): 11 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 37 days of observations between 2 September and 14 October 1997. Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Woods (1995): 11 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 31 days of observations between 28 August and 17 October 1995. College of the Atlantic (1988): 14 were observed from Beech Mountain during 27 days of observations between 12 September and 12 October 1988. Long (1987): Probably never more than 2 pairs on MDI; former aeries were located on Champlain Mountain and on Eagle Cliffs on St. Sauveur Mtn.. Species was extirpated as a breeding bird on MDI during the late 1950s. Major (1987): 14 were observed from Beech Mountain during 75 days of observations between 31 August and 15 November 1987. Major and Mittelhauser (1986): 12 were observed from Beech Mountain during 76 days of observations between 30 August and 13 November 1986. North and Chidester (1986) Reseased from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) Accidental spring migrant, rare fall migrant, accidental in winter. One spring record since 1950, a bird perched near Champlain Mountain on 20 March 1954 (Senne); last nested on Champlain Mountain in 1955 (P. Favour). A handwritten note reports nesting on MDI during summer 1980, although no details are given. Duley and North (1984) released at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Baird (1983) recorded from Beech Mountain during the fall of 1980. Bond (1969) Probably never more than 2 pairs inhabited MDI; former aeries occurred at the steep slope of Champlain Mountain and on Eagle Cliffs on St. Sauveur Mountain. During the past decade, the peregrine has apparently been extirpated as a breeding on MDI, although an occasional individual is still seen on migration. Long (1951) 2 eyries were located on MDI in June of 1950. Palmer (1949) (** refers to subspecies anatum) fledged young have been seen near an eyrie on MDI on 25 July. Bond (19??) (** refers to subspecies anatum) Rare summer resident; Probably not more than 2 pairs nest on MDI; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): (** refers to subspecies anatum) Probably 2 eyries on MDI, although only report the one on the precipitous slope of Eagle Cliffs. Sullivan (1937): (** refers to subspecies anatum): rare transient; several observed in September 1935 by A.E. Brower and A. Stupka., Park Species Data Source: Witt (1997); Woods (1997); Sharp (1997); Woods (1995); College of the Atlantic (1988); Long (1987); Major (1987); Major and Mittelhauser (1986); North and Chidester (1986); Russell (1984?); Duley and North (1984);
